Texas licensing
Texas licensing refers to the state-mandated authorization process for individuals and businesses to legally sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance in Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) issues licenses such as General Lines Agent, Adjuster, and Life Agent after candidates pass specific exams.
Applicants must complete pre-licensing education hours–24 for adjusters and 40 for life agents–before testing, as per YourInsurance.info. License fees range from $50 for temporary licenses to $150 for standard agent licenses as of 2024.
TDI requires fingerprint background checks through IdentoGO with a fee of $41.45 per applicant. Licenses must be renewed every two years by completing 24 hours of continuing education, including at least 2 hours in ethics topics.
TDI enforces penalties up to $25,000 per violation against unlicensed activity or non-compliance. Out-of-state agents can apply for reciprocal licensing if their home state has an agreement with Texas; examples include Oklahoma and Louisiana.
