In-house membership
An in-house membership is a direct arrangement where healthcare providers, such as dental offices or primary care clinics, offer patients discounted services for a monthly or annual fee without involving third-party insurers. In-house memberships typically cover preventive care–such as cleanings and checkups at dental practices like Aspen Dental and Heartland Dental–at no extra cost.
Providers set fixed prices for additional procedures under in-house memberships, with discounts ranging from 10% to 60% on treatments including fillings, crowns, and x-rays. Patients pay the provider directly; there are no claims processes or reimbursement delays typical of traditional insurance plans.
In-house memberships do not qualify as health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), so they do not meet federal minimum essential coverage requirements according to IRS guidelines. These programs usually exclude major medical events–for example, hospitalizations or specialist referrals–and focus solely on routine and minor office-based care, according to a report from YourInsurance.info (Your Insurance Info).
Most in-house memberships have immediate activation with no waiting periods, unlike many dental PPOs that impose six- to twelve-month waits for certain benefits. Enrollment is open regardless of pre-existing conditions, which differs from some private insurance policies that restrict access based on health history.
Cancellation terms vary by provider but often allow month-to-month participation without long-term contracts–examples include ClearChoice Dental’s Smile Protection Plan and Oak Street Health’s Membership Program.
