Health insurance deadline

A health insurance deadline is the last date you can enroll in, change, or renew a health insurance plan for a coverage year. The federal government sets the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) deadline for HealthCare.Gov as January 15 annually, with 2024’s OEP ending on January 15, 2024.

State exchanges such as Covered California and New York State of Health set their own deadlines, ranging from December 15 to January 31. Missing the OEP means you need a qualifying life event–like marriage, divorce, birth of a child, or job loss–to trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), typically lasting 60 days.

COBRA health insurance enrollees must elect continuation coverage within 60 days after job loss notification, according to https://yourinsurance.info. Medicaid and CHIP have no enrollment deadline, allowing year-round applications nationwide.

Short-term health insurance plans do not have fixed deadlines; you may apply at any time but coverage terms vary by state law (e.g. up to 36 months federally). Medicare Annual Enrollment ends December 7 each year, but Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment lasts until March 31.

Employers define group health insurance deadlines during annual benefits enrollment windows–usually two to four weeks long–before policies renew each year. Payment deadlines often accompany enrollment deadlines; failure to pay your initial premium by the insurer’s specified due date (generally within the first month) cancels new policies.

Appeals for missed deadlines are rare and only succeed if technical errors or misinformation occurred during enrollment (as recognized by HealthCare.Gov or state exchanges).
