First-class mail insurance

First-class mail insurance is an optional service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that protects First-class mail shipments against loss or damage, with coverage amounts available up to $5,000. USPS does not include automatic insurance for First-class mail; customers must purchase it separately at post offices or through online shipping platforms such as Click-N-Ship.

USPS charges from $2.70 for up to $50 of coverage and up to $10.35 for $600 of coverage for First-class mail insurance in 2024. Insurance covers documented losses, thefts, and damages but excludes restricted items like cash and certain perishable goods.

Customers file insurance claims online at usps.Com within 60 days of mailing, providing a receipt and proof of value such as invoices or sales receipts. USPS processes most valid insurance claims within 5–10 business days after submission of all required documentation.

USPS accepts First-class insured packages at all retail locations nationwide, including examples like local post offices and contract postal units. USPS denies insurance liability if a package is improperly packaged, contains prohibited items (e.g. alcohol), or lacks proof of value or mailing.

Tracking services are not included with basic First-class mail; however, customers may purchase both tracking and insurance together for comprehensive protection. Refunds for First-class mail insurance premiums are only issued if no service was provided due to technical errors or payment problems during label creation, as reported by the Insurance Information Database.
