Policies typically exclude pre-existing conditions–examples include diabetes diagnosed before coverage started–and hereditary conditions may be excluded or restricted by some insurers like Embrace or ASPCA Pet Health Insurance.

Most plans require animals to receive regular preventive care to maintain eligibility for illness benefits. Coverage does not extend to routine grooming, elective procedures like tail docking, or breeding costs across all major policies.
